New post series! (Cookie Fonster’s Homestuck post series introduction)

One day, I decided to start a blog post series in which I critique the popular story webcomic Homestuck as I read all the way through it for the third time. By critique, I meant that I would mostly review and discuss the stuff in it, but not really negatively, since I’m a pretty big fan of Homestuck. However, as I progressed through my re-read, the posts grew to be in-depth commentary on the comic, to the point where I wish I posted that way the entire time. That said, over the years I’ve been faced with the truth that my Homestuck blog posts have evolved over time, both the writing style and the opinions I express, and while I had at one point started a project to rewrite the first 27 posts, I no longer plan on finishing that. My Homestuck blog post series began in September 2015, and after numerous pauses and burnouts, I finished the post series in September 2021. The post series is meant for people who have read Homestuck in its entirety, because the posts will contain spoilers for stuff that happens later.

Before we begin, I’d like to give a shout-out to this blog known only as “Let’s Re-Read Homestuck”, the blog that inspired this post series. It’s a very well-written unfinished Homestuck reread blog that you should check out if you like my posts. Also check out Fletcher Wortmann’s It’s Hard and Nobody Understands, another excellent unfinished Homestuck commentary document that helped inspire this as I went along.

Note about the post series’ title: first it was called Cookie Fonster Critiques Homestuck. Then, at post 28 when I started Act 5 Act 2 and revamped my posting style, it became Cookie Fonster’s Homestuck Commentary. At post 80, when I got out of a hiatus of a year and ten months, I renamed again to Cookie Fonster Dissects Homestuck, something I had wanted to do for quite a while. And finally at post 115, when I started post-Gigapause Homestuck (the part that hadn’t existed yet when I first read it), the post series became Cookie Fonster’s Homestuck Reflections. The post series concluded with post number 140, going over Act 7 and the credits, which I posted on the sixth anniversary of the first post.

For some details (mostly for archival’s sake): the first time I read Homestuck, I skimmed through almost everything and thus didn’t have much of a reaction to a lot of stuff. Later, when I read the comic a second time, I actually read through most stuff but definitely didn’t catch every detail. Before starting this post series, I frequently reread small portions of it since, not to mention reading the updates as they were posted.

I originally thought of not starting this project until the end of Homestuck, which as of this writing has only partially happened. When I started the post series, the comic was pretty nearly finished and on hiatus, believed to end in 2016. But since I’m not that patient of a guy, I figured, why not start now during the pause?

Originally I decided to make a post on this blog every Wednesday morning and Saturday evening (Eastern Time Zone). OK, this isn’t exactly true; at first I wanted the post series to be weekly, but I immediately found that to be too slow of a posting rate. In each post I go over some portion of the comic—originally, it was generally around 100 pages each post, sometimes fewer, sometimes more. Later, as my post series evolved, the average number of pages covered per post changed to 50. The post schedule was at first consistently twice a week, then every five days, but since late 2016, the schedule has had no consistency despite my best efforts.
