Thoughts on the Homestuck Ending Credits

Today Homestuck updated with a short interactive page, followed by a credit roll plus photo montage. And you know what? I actually truly honest to god enjoyed it. My reaction to it was much like my initial reaction to Collide: it made me forget all my salt about late Homestuck, which is kind of a mystical effect. The update addresses a lot of things Act 7 left unresolved, like bringing back the human and troll races and what happened to Terezi; it even gives Jane and Jake a semblance of satisfying arc resolutions!

But the end credits and Collide both had a certain flaw that make them almost perfect. In Collide that flaw is Slick getting killed off; the end credits, meanwhile, don’t at all address John’s blatant romantic tease with Roxy, which is saying a lot because the credits feature two characters getting married, which feels surreal to even say. But since I don’t like being pessimistic about hopes for the future of Homestuck, I’m still hoping that pairing is addressed somehow in the epilogue. I would say more but the next post after the one I’m working on is a PERFECT time to discuss that ship.

Despite that problem, the end credits make me a good deal less salty about Act 7, something that should logically be impossible but somehow isn’t. Now what do those credits mean for this post series? Pretty much what the first Homestuck updates after I started this post series meant: I’ll have more stuff to think about differently in retrospect, and might complain about stuff a tiny bit less?

Happy Cascade Day everyone.

Homestuck posts no longer have a set schedule

I finally came to terms with the fact that I’m no longer able to keep a steady posting schedule with this post series, something that’s been obvious for months, but only now am I finally letting go of those phantom post schedules that don’t mean anything. From here on out, the only certainty regarding post release dates is as follows: there should never be more than two weeks in between Homestuck posts, unless I’m on vacation or something.

That said, I’d still like to give an update regarding my next post. Right now I’m about 40% through that post, and it should be done in maybe two or three days.

EDIT (9/22/2016): It’s been two days since I posted this, and now I’m about 80% through my next post; mostly what’s left is another expository Calliope pesterlog. It should be released within the next two days. From here on out, these progress reports will be edited to the start of my most recently published Homestuck post.

EDIT 2 (9/24/2016): Next post is almost finished now, as in really really close to done. It should be released tomorrow.

Homestuck posts are now every Monday

Except for the next post after the one I’m presently working on, that’ll be my anniversary post and will be released on the 18th if I can make it on that day.

My next post is currently about two-thirds finished and should be done tomorrow Tuesday Wednesday, because I’ve got a lot of homework to do today (September 12). Post is 80% finished as of Monday afternoon.

God I hope I can get the anniversary post done on time. If I don’t make that date I could post it two days after that (September 20), the anniversary of my first Homestuck post not counting the introduction post.

EDIT: As of September 13, the next post is 95% finished, and I should have it done tomorrow.

Homestuck posts will now be weekly

And in addition to that, my next post will be delayed by one day, so that it’ll be released September 4 September 5, which means my plan for at least the next month is to release Homestuck posts on Sundays; this will include releasing a post on the 18th, this post series’ anniversary.

Here’s why: I think this semester, I might legitimately be somewhat swamped in school work. During the start of 2016, I talked about how I haven’t really experienced the effect of school work dampering all the cool fun Internet stuff, but now it has sort of affected work on my blog, at least to some degree. And it’s not just because of school work; alongside that, I’ve been participating in making music for the ever-growing Cool and New Webcomic soundtrack, which is one of the most fun things I’ve done in a long time. But what’s important is, I actually do have a decent load of homework and stuff to do each day, a load that I have a feeling may get bigger as my classes progress. With that in mind, I think weekly posts may be a reasonable thing to do for the time being.

You may be wondering, how far am I with my next Homestuck post? As of today (September 1), I am about 30% done; I’ll be sure to update this number as I go along. Though I’ve been sluggish on the post the past few days, I’ll probably be able to get quite a bit more done on the weekend, especially considering it’ll be the Labor Day weekend.

EDIT: I just made a cool ASCII progress meter to track how far I am with that post. Last updated September 5, 10:05 PM.

                                           100%
Start █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ Finish

EDIT 2 (September 3): My next post will either be delayed by a day or cover a little less content than I originally planned. I haven’t decided which yet but I’m leaning towards the latter.

EDIT 3 (September 4): I think I’ll have to end up doing motherfuckin’ both things. Next post coming tomorrow.

EDIT 4 (September 5): OK, next post is almost done done. I shortened the amount of pages covered even more than previous because god damn have I delayed this post long enough. Because of this, Act 6 Act 2 will be split into six parts instead of five, which I’ll explain further when I finish the post.

Another Homestuck and Problem Sleuth post update

First I’ll talk about my next Homestuck post, then my plans for the Problem Sleuth post series.

My next Homestuck post will be released Saturday, September 3. I’m choosing this date because that’ll put me right back on track for releasing a post on the anniversary of this post series, assuming I’ll keep posting every five days. Sorry the date’s so late, but as I’ve mentioned before, that’s because it’s kind of long. It’s also sort of because I’ve been busy with some stuff, mostly keeping track of everything and getting used to stuff as I’m starting my last year of high school.

Now what’s up with my next post exactly? The bottom line is, dividing Act 6 Act 2 into posts ended up a lot more complicated than I thought it would be. Originally I wanted to do something like this:

  • One post for pages preceding the Dirk/Roxy selection screen
  • One post for Dirk’s half of the selection screen
  • One post for Roxy’s half
  • Two posts for the pages following the selection screen

As I soon discovered, the problem with that idea is, the first post here would cover about 80 pages, which is just way too much to write about in five days. So I ended up covering a little over half of those pages, and I’ve decided to revise the plan as follows:

  • Part of the pages preceding the selection screen
  • The rest of those pages + most of Dirk’s half
  • The last part of Dirk’s half + Roxy’s half
  • Two posts for the pages following the selection screen

I think that’s a fairly even way to divide up all these posts. I’ll let you know when I’m close to finished with the one I’m working on by updating this post.

As for my Problem Sleuth post series, I’m really not sure what to do with that. The commentary thing worked well with the first few chapters of the comic, but now, not so much. I do want to keep on re-reading the comic, but I think I might do the following: instead of writing up commentary the way I do with my Homestuck posts, I might start just writing down more general thoughts on the comic. Maybe there will be some parts I feel are really worth commenting on; I don’t know. I think I should see for myself how that’ll go.

Progress report on next Problem Sleuth post

My next Problem Sleuth post covers about 120 pages, and I have 30 left to cover. I’ve kind of been working on it on and off, but now I’ve figured out a good way to make Problem Sleuth posts and Homestuck posts at once without sticking to one or the other for too long.

Sometimes in both post series, I reach a part where I’m not sure what to say about it. This happened about a week ago with my Problem Sleuth post series, where I reached a point where I thought, “man I don’t have anything to say about these next ten pages” and pretty much hit a roadblock. But just earlier today, I went back to those pages and thought up commentary easily, something I probably could’ve done a day or two after hitting the roadblock. And now I’ve also hit a similar point where I’m not sure what to say about the next bunch of pages. So I’ve decided to start doing the following: when I hit a roadblock on my next Problem Sleuth post I’ll work on my next Homestuck post, and vice versa. My next Problem Sleuth post should ideally be released tomorrow, two days before my next Homestuck post. EDIT (8/23): Actually, it’s more feasible to release both of those posts on August 24, leading to a 2x BLOG POST COMBO.

Next Homestuck post coming tomorrow

It’s almost done, I promise you; I’d say it’s at least 80% done. Next one after that will be released on the 24th if things go as planned; if that doesn’t work out then I’ll try to schedule my posts so that I publish one on the post series’ birthday regardless.

As for my next Problem Sleuth post, I haven’t been working on it very much, though I probably could finish it in the next few days while I work on my next Homestuck post after the one I’m working on, though not before I finish the one I’m currently working on.

Another blog update

I’m back from vacation, meaning I can once again make posts for this blog. And I’ve decided on what my schedule for my Homestuck and Problem Sleuth posts will look like as summer comes to a close.

For my Homestuck posts, I will return to an older posting schedule: new posts every five days. Until further notice, I’ll continue making those posts at this steady rate, even when school starts again. My next Homestuck post will be released August 9 August 10, next after that August 14, and then my every five days schedule will be put in action once more. I’m choosing this date because if I publish a Homestuck post every five days from that date onwards, that would mean I’ll release a post on the one-year anniversary of that post series (September 18, the day I released the series’ introductory post).

As for my Problem Sleuth posts, the pattern has generally been one Problem Sleuth post for every two Homestuck posts, so I might as well follow through with that and release a Problem Sleuth post every ten days or so. Those posts don’t actually take as long to make as my Homestuck posts; they’re just a lesser priority and thus I don’t work on those as often. Next Problem Sleuth post will be released August 12 or so.

Laptop story + blog update

As you may have noticed, I haven’t been able to keep up with my plan to make two more Homestuck blog posts before I leave for vacation tomorrow. Here’s why that is.

Three days ago, during my summer camp, I lost one of the earbuds from the headphones I brought with me, and I started frantically searching for it, keeping the laptop I brought with me as I did it. Then, I left my laptop in the hall of the dorm building I was in, and when I went back there, it was gone. I couldn’t find it anywhere the next few days, and I started feeling really terrible about it because it belonged to my mom and all that. I could still get on other computers in the varioius buildings but those are of course kind of inconvenient.

Today was the last day of camp, and right after I left and got some food nearby with my family, I found out that the laptop was found again. It turned out that someone put my laptop in the dorm room next to mine and it was there the whole time, but nobody knew about it until today. This is good because I had some project files saved on there which I was afraid I lost for good, but sucked a little because I kind of wish I had it back sooner to do stuff on it.

Regardless of all that, losing my laptop prevented me from getting as much done in my Homestuck posts. The next post will be released tonight. It won’t be all that long, and it’ll cover around 40 pages (including two medium-length pesterlogs), and I’d say it’s about 80% finished. The next post after that (also will be fairly short) will be released a few days after August 6 (not the 5th as I originally thought), when I return from my next vacation. After that I’ll see what happens with this blog.

Another two-week (EDIT: one-week) blog pause

As I said in an earlier post, I have three vacations for this summer. The first already happened, and the next two will take up most of the next two weeks starting Sunday (July 24). Before my second vacation (actually a summer camp) started, I hoped to buy a laptop with money earned through a summer job, but I’ve had really tough luck getting a job, let alone getting a laptop. But a laptop is highly recommended for that camp because of computer activities, so my mother is letting me bring her old work laptop (along with my iPod of course, which is no good for blogging). Unfortunately, I don’t think I’d be allowed to do personal stuff like this blog on that laptop because of her work restrictions or something. EDIT: Actually, I will be able to do my blog and all that other stuff on that computer after all. I’ll be at home again on the 29th and 30th, but after that will be my third vacation, where I will only bring my iPod even if I did have my own laptop, which lasts until August 5.

Now what does that mean for my blog? It means I won’t make any posts for the next two weeks the first week of August. Here’s how things will go for the next two and a half weeks:

  • Within the next few days, I’ll release my next Homestuck post.
  • Then, I’ll work on my next Problem Sleuth post, which I will most likely release on the 29th or 30th when I’m home.
  • After my third vacation is over, I will get back to my regular posting schedule, and then see what happens when school starts some time later.
  • After post number 61, I will release two more Homestuck posts and one more Problem Sleuth post before leaving for my third vacation.
